Challenge: Accurate data collection is critical to data-driven decision making in special education. However, many special education professionals need additional training and resources to confidently collect, interpret, and apply student data in meaningful ways. Without a clear understanding of data collection methods, they may struggle to monitor progress, adjust instruction, or write effective IEP goals.
Solution: To support deeper understanding, I designed a comprehensive instructor-led training along with a visually engaging infographic that breaks down essential data collection concepts. The infographic highlights the “5 W’s” of data (Who, What, When, Where, Why), common types of data collection (e.g., frequency, duration, interval), and the cyclical process of collecting data, analyzing trends, and using findings to inform goal writing. This resource serves as a quick-reference tool educators can use in real time to reinforce best practices and make data collection more manageable and meaningful in their daily work.
